First Step

For many St. Francis House guests, the “first step” towards employment is not necessarily writing a resume, but rather exploring personal strengths, talents, likes, and dislikes.  It is also very important for guests to reflect on and address the barriers that may have stood in the way of their gainful employment in the past.

In First Step, a five-day course, over 200 guests per year explore their interests, talents, and possible careers, learn how to set attainable goals, and learn about employer expectations in preparation for work.  Additionally, First Step participants are introduced to our Moving Ahead Program (MAP) and other vocational training opportunities in the community.  Ongoing case management is integral to the program.

First Step is open to students who are 18 or older, currently or formerly homeless, and have experienced significant gaps in their employment history.  Basic literacy skills are required to complete course activities including:

  • Exploring goals and dreams
  • “Barriers Workshop” to explore issues that have had a negative impact on students’ work histories
  • “Goal-Setting Workshop” to explore options for removing barriers
  • Introduction to career options that match students’ skills and interests
  • Introduction to job-readiness skills: conducting a job search, interviewing and communicating with supervisors, basic computer skills

All First Step students meet one-on-one with the course instructor, and may continue to do so after they have completed the course.  Students can use all the resources St. Francis House offers to support their job hunting and other aspects of life planning.  After completing the program, many students pursue further education or vocational training, including our Moving Ahead Program (MAP).
